# Test your connection

> A short check tells you, before you save, that Condense can reach your broker and sign in to it.

Select **Test Connection** in step 2. Condense tries to reach the broker with the details you entered. Condense saves a connection after it has tested successfully.

## What the test checks

* **NATS (embedded and self managed)**: Connects to the server, signs in, and reads basic information from your JetStream account. It gives up after about 5 seconds.
* **Condense Kafka Broker**: Checks your credentials and reads the cluster information. About 3 seconds.
* **Confluent Cloud**: Signs in and reads the list of topics. If you switched on Schema Registry it checks that too. About 8 seconds.
* **Apache Kafka (self managed)**: Opens a connection to the bootstrap servers, completes the TLS or SASL handshake and reads the cluster information. About 8 seconds.

## If the test fails

The message tells you why. The two most common causes are the broker rejecting the credentials, and the broker not being reachable from Condense. See [Troubleshooting](https://docs.condense.io/condense/v3.0.0/broker-registry/troubleshooting.md) for the messages and what to do.
