Bulk Upload Environment Variables allows you to import, edit, validate, and manage multiple environment variables (ENVs) from a single interface. Instead of manually creating each variable, you can upload an existing JSON configuration, review the imported values, make bulk edits, and save the complete configuration before deploying your application. This feature simplifies application configuration, reduces manual effort, and minimizes errors when working with applications that require a large number of environment variables.

How It Works

The Bulk Upload Environment Variables workflow consists of the following steps:
  1. Open the Develop Application wizard.
  2. Navigate to the Environment Variables step.
  3. Select Upload JSON.
  4. Paste or upload a JSON object containing environment variables.
  5. Review the imported variables in the Preview Variables editor.
  6. Modify the configuration if required.
  7. Resolve any validation errors.
  8. Save the environment variables and continue building the application.

Import Environment Variables

Environment variables can be imported from a JSON object. During import:
  • Every JSON key is converted into an Environment Variable Name.
  • Every JSON value is mapped to the Default Value field.
  • Imported variables are appended to the existing list.
  • Existing environment variables are never replaced automatically.
  • JSON files can be imported multiple times without limitation.

Preview Variables Editor

After a successful import, Condense opens the Preview Variables editor where all environment variables can be managed before saving. The editor supports:
  • Editing existing variables
  • Adding new variables
  • Deleting variables
  • Duplicating selected variables
  • Selecting multiple variables using checkboxes
  • Drag-and-drop reordering
  • Full-screen editing for large configurations

Editing Environment Variables

Each environment variable can be configured with the following information:
Placeholder and Configuration Name fields have been removed from the environment variable configuration. Default Value and About Variable are optional.

Condense validates environment variables while you edit them.

JSON Validation

Before variables can be imported, the JSON must be valid. The following validations are performed:

Environment Variable Validation

Each environment variable is validated individually. Validation errors are displayed immediately, allowing issues to be resolved before saving.

Export Environment Variables

The current environment variable configuration can be exported as a JSON file. Exporting enables you to:
  • Back up application configuration.
  • Reuse configurations across multiple applications.
  • Maintain local development configurations.

Bulk Operations

The Preview Variables editor supports several bulk operations to simplify environment variable management. Available operations include:
  • Select multiple environment variables.
  • Delete selected variables.
  • Duplicate selected variables.
  • Reorder variables using drag-and-drop.

Important Notes

Keep the following behavior in mind when using Bulk Upload Environment Variables:
  • Importing a JSON configuration appends variables to the existing list.
  • Existing environment variables are not overwritten automatically.
  • Environment variables can be edited before saving.
  • There is no limit to the number of JSON uploads.
  • There is no limit to the number of environment variables that can be managed.

  • Import existing application configurations instead of recreating variables manually.
  • Use clear and descriptive environment variable names.
  • Group related variables together using drag-and-drop ordering.
